A famed duo, Lewis and Clark are responsible for exploring most of the new land acquired by the Louisiana Purchase.
Today in 1804, Lewis and Clark begin their famed expedition to explore newly acquired U.S. land. Being the third President, Thomas Jefferson made a deal with France to gain a large amount of land known as the Louisiana purchase. The land acquired needed to be explored first, Jefferson tasked Meriwether Lewis and William Clark with this job. The trip began going up the Mississippi river, where the men met Fur trader Toussaint Charbonneau and his wife Sacagawea. Charbonneau joined the journey as a interpreter and the group carried on. by 1805, the group would reach the Pacific Ocean, and in 1806, almost two and a half years after leaving, they would return home with valuable information.
